Runner friends who are trying to train and race epic stuff in this epic heat and humidity and blazing sun: exertional heat stroke is real and is no joke no matter what your age. We all like to compete on the edge, and experienced (i.e., old) athletes like me know that there IS an edge and sometimes we can fall off. Please be closely in tune with your body and live to run another day.

If you experience any of these symptoms during, or even hours after your workout or race--dizziness, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, just don't feel like yourself--make sure you're not alone and that someone is checking up on you. If you run a temperature that won't go down, if your heart rate won't return to recovery level, and especially if you feel lower back pain around your kidneys, please call your doctor IMMEDIATELY.

I'll share the details if asked, but short version is that I landed in the ER after a race in these conditions and learned my lesson, which hasn’t faded after 8 years. Please don't keep pushing and learn it the hard way like I did. Thank you. Run strong, run safe, and run smart. #running #3RUN2 #chicagoisforrunners

She takes my breath away in some way each and ever

She takes my breath away in some way each and every day. Last night, she was stunningly beautiful beyond measure inside and out, in every way, from the moment I turned to see her in the middle of the Wabash Avenue bridge, through the moments we said our vows and placed the rings on each other’s fingers in the presence of our children.

And then, maybe it’s as we always suspected that our being together tore the fabric of the universe to allow us to do something great, or maybe every Irish wedding is required to have a little thunder and lightning…either way, if rain on a wedding day is a sign of good luck, we have enough for every one of our lives to come.

Truly blessed with friends, family and each other. This is what love is.

Can't say I'm a happy camper right now. Second se

Can't say I'm a happy camper right now.

Second setback in two weeks, both triggered by bending the wrong way doing household chores. Each time it's been a little less painful but a little more discouraging.

Missed the weekend, looks like I'm on the shelf for a few days more, and I'll need to use them to sort out some things. Was getting overconfident in how good I felt, probably pushed the strength training too much, don't think I pushed mileage or pace but who knows. Even though I backed off everything in the last two weeks since the first incident, reaching for anything is an adventure right now and running seems like a distant hope.

I know I'm not a young man any more. Haven't quite accepted thinking and acting like an old man though and you know, that may never happen. There are ways through this: break it apart, be more careful and thoughtful about the pieces, be a bit more patient with the road, be accepting enough to tamp down some of the goals, for this year at least.

Talking it all over and sorting it all out with Mary has helped tremendously--she's been there herself, and is always there for me. I'll live through her marathon training for the summer. Seeing my crew and everyone else around the world accomplishing amazing, magnificent things--did you see TTB Chicago Friday night?--keeps the fire hot. My training activity may look a little funky over the next few weeks or months, but I promise myself and promise you I will be advancing best I can, and will be accountable for every day. And if that means walking + cheer squad is all I get, that will just have to be it for a while, and I'll make the most of it. (cont’d in comment)
